That sounds terrible, hemmingford. I can only imagine what the aftermath must look like. To me, this kind of thing is a worst-case scenario of what happens when things start to fall apart, and there absolutely must be some severe condemnations and punishments, otherwise it will happen again in other locales.

I've never completely believed that smallish operations (as opposed to all-out industrial ones) are necessarily better for the welfare and safety of animals, because many times the people running them have little or no empathy for any species of animal, and this is an illustration of just such an operation. This sorry event should be a touchpoint to enact some animal cruelty legislation, but I'm concerned that not enough people will raise a stink about it. How about getting your local vets to rise up and make some comments and condemnations? There are at least 10-11 vets at the Ormstown clinic...

I live in a rural area where recently there was an incident that has been given very little attention in the media.

Short story: The owner of a bison/elk farm was found guilty of having a marijuana grow-operation. (The animals were used to mask the smell.) The judge ordered him to get rid of the animals. What did the POS drug dealer do? What he allegedly did was release the animals into an enclosure and invited some friends over to hunt them down. 40 dead bison and elk carcasses are rotting in the field. Oh, supposedly there were 2 off-duty police officers among the shooters.

Why couldn't these animals have been slaughtered humanly? and why are police officers hanging out with drug dealers. This whole story is so horrible on so many levels.

(I have driven by this field many times and these are very gentle animals.)

It was a very good point - whether presented nervously or not - and I hope people paid attention to it.

skdadl, I was only vaguely aware of those amendment proceedings as they were happening, and it seemed just par for the course when nothing changed. There have to be more people from a broader range of backgrounds on board for this, the next time it comes up - hopefully soon.

(I don't think I made my point so well at the mic - I seem to turn into a very nervous animal when I have to speak publicly; all of my animal fear instincts come out and get the best of me. I need to be conditioned out of them.)
Good for the OSPCA. May they continue their good work with all of those widow's mites. :-)

Croghan - every single chemical, drug, etc. has been tested for toxicity on vast numbers of animals. The "lethal dose 50", or LD50, which is just another banal and standard notation on toxicity that appears on all drug package inserts, is the single dose that kills 50% of the test population.
If I believed in reincarnation, I'd pray that all animal abusers be reincarnated as test subjects or livestock. I dunno, that sounds cruel, but it is such a dilemma.

brebis noire, good for you to have taken the mic and made such a point so well. Can you tell us what sort of reception/reaction you got, especially from "the predictable quarters"? Or could you tell?

My admiration for people who can face up to the terrible things we do to animals knows no bounds. I don't have the courage to face much of it, but that's why the one automatic deduction from my monthly widow's mite that I will never cancel, no matter how poor I get, goes to the OSPCA, one of the driving forces behind the revisions to the Criminal Code that Sklar talked about. That is one long and ultra-frustrating saga, stopped in its tracks again and again by ignorance and prejudice and also, methinks, some very well-funded interest groups. If only Canadians knew ...

The whole conference sounds like a good learning experience - I learn some things just by reading this recounting.

The AM, while looking for something else I happened upon a scientific q/a blog. Someone was looking for equipment to subject mice to 80ppm of hydrogen sulfide, H2S. No one seemed to be bothered by this .... one fellow observed that at 500 ppm comes instant death - but beyond that, nada.

When I started to work in my field we (people) were allowed a half hour at 25 ppm and the time increased as the ppms dropped .... now - humans are not allowed to work in ANY hydrogen sulfide at all. Special breathing gear must be worn.

This is what you have to overcome, beyond the casual mention of 'those poor mice' no one was bothered .....
